the last hours of September 2010

yes, you'll never forget ur first. nope, not only ur first love, it could be your first car or the first time u stay away from home.. even the first day at work..

Letter says: If you Accept this job offer, Report on 1st October 2010. Bring 9 documents.

it's technically not my 1st day at work tomorrow, just the day to Report to work. but its definitely the beginning. i don't know if that makes any difference, but there's a million and 1 uncertainties..

1. i don't know where i am suppose to be, at what floor, to report to whom. i don't even know what time i need to be there and i wonder how long it's gonna take.

2. i don't know if i need original documents, or if all copies need to be certified true although they are just letters/reports/forms and not certificates. i don't know exactly the documents i am supposed to bring and don't know how to complete the forms i already have, but i know they are insufficient, which might put my work on hold as warned before.

3. if i don't work, would they just make me jobless again till i return with my correct documents 2weeks+ later?

4. if i do work, when do i start? immediately? in the afternoon? the following week? where would i be working? am i going to be in my own hometown or will i be moved to another town in Sarawak? would i have time to move over and settle in then? what do i do when i start work? do i observe first or hands on right away? don't i get some mini induction? are there other new dental officers starting as well? how many departments are there? would i be attached to all? how long in each?

5. then the less important questions come along.. what attire should i wear? long-sleeved or short (cross infection)? do i get a uniform? would it be hot or cold? should i have a cardigan? how long must skirts be? must i wear baju kurung for Fridays? and do i work on Saturdays? how often are the On Calls? how does it work? where do i keep my stuff? what time and how long is the lunch hour? do i pack lunch or socialize and eat at some hawker stall? if i drive my car, can i find a car park? do i need some sticker? how do i get to work and back home everyday now? can i get a lift from someone? and when would they pay me? how does the tax system work here? EPF? Pencen?

6. then the stupider questions also come piling.. what if i need to extract a tooth right away or do a minor oral surgery? or a patient faints on me? can i handle a medical emergency now? what if the dentist starts grilling me questions or testing my (zero) knowledge? what if he questions the difference between UK and Malaysia clinical guidelines or policies? do i need to prescribe drugs already? is it ok to keep asking for help? what if the nurses hate me then? what if i can't understand the patients? or cant read the previous dentist's handwriting? what if my skills fail me?

so many questions waiting to be answered tomorrow.. of all the many many things i don't know, there's one thing i do know: this is definitely going to be a loooong transition from a dental graduate to a 1st year dental officer..

Old Travel Pics 15 - Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, the capital of Ireland. i bet most students (esp medics) know dublin well for its RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland) thus needs little explanation.

around dublin university, the city, RCSI and the famous Temple Bar

the main shopping street of Dublin with the spire of dublin in the centre

and best of all, crazy snap shots with my ex collegemate, sarah marilyn (another local tour guide) who is now working as a doctor already! had irish lunch, ice cream and a walk at the St Stephen's Green park

sights along the River Liffey

there was a sand sculpture exhibition near a castle. interesting.

of course, don't miss the Guinness St James Brewery where they teach you how guinness is made

they let you have samples along the way, a free keychain with a drop of Guinness and a free pint at the top of the tower where you get to see the city of Dublin. one of the few nice alcohol factories (that's what i call them) besides Bushmills distillery, Belfast (more later). but its tak halal.. Lol..

Old Travel Pics 14 - Belfast, Northern Ireland

i always seem to make the same blunder about Belfast, changing my british pounds £ to euros € before coming over (did it twice) forgetting that Belfast is in Northern Ireland which is a country in the UK and uses Pounds Sterling as well, unlike Ireland which uses euros.

thank goodness for bank cards, i still manage to withdraw from the ATM.

around Belfast City: the queen's university, some statues outside the bus station where a man took a photo with me, small dad and the big blue fish and even tinier dad in front of the lady with the ring near the Lagan River.

i was more interested in the day trip tour which i bought from the International Youth Hostel on the spot (even took the same tour twice) to the Giants Causeway.

a stop along the way near a harbour where dad promotes his chips.. and some views along the way

next stop: Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. did not realize it then but now i know that most of Scotland and Ireland have these beautiful cliff sceneries (so more to come!)

the 1st time i came to Belfast this attraction was closed cause it was winter (although its supposed to be open all year round!) so here i am back again during the summer and finally get to cross this suspension bridge connecting the mainland of Antrim to Carrick Island.

we had to take turns cause its a one-way street so maybe 20-30 people can cross one direction then you have to wait for the next 20-30 of the opposite side to cross back, so you can imagine its quite a queue, but you'll get a chance, no one wants to stay on the bridge too long anyways. and you also can buy a certificate for crossing the bridge! yes, i do fall for silly tourist gimmicks but they are souvenirs, aren't they?

lastly, my one of my favourite attractions in Ireland, the Giant's Causeway due to the hexagonal basalt columns of different heights result of an ancient volcanic eruption.

definitely one of God's work of art.

nope, not my shot, but just to show you how jaw-dropping the place is

again, not my shot. firstly cause i am no camera-pro and secondly, it was pouring when i was there! *drats* warning folks, ireland Rains dogs and cats and whatever else domestic animals during summer!!

yes, my not-so-pretty shots, as you can see there's umbrellas here and there. the rain did not stop my dad though as he still climbed the slippery hexagonal columns and some good Samaritans offered a hand or two and some cover from the rain with their umbrellas (which i manage to steal a shot of). i think they are malaysian university students as well.

goes to show that postcard views are that way for a reason, those views really need good cameras+cameraman/ well-maintained attractions (like no grass or graffiti) and perfect weather! now that, is hard to predict.

Old Travel Pics 13 - The Highlands in Scotland

we rented a car to drive around the Highlands in Scotland

Stirling Castle

where we had our picnic.. and the driver with our rented car

though there are many clans in Scotland, i only know One name: William Wallace aka Braveheart.

unfortunately i don't really remember most of the names of the many lochs/lakes in Scotland as we randomly drove and drove and stop for beautiful picture stops (like Isle of Skye) but i just know we did not go to the famous Loch ness monster. i still think I've seen some really breath-taking loch sights anyway. a myth is still a myth, don't need to drive so much further to see an over-publicized loch for tourism sake. you'll agree with me once you see my scenic photos.

picnicking along the way with our own packed food, like how road trips should be like (cause that means constant supply of food in the car)

3 cheers for a great road trip with the 3 lee sisters! (i still wonder what this pose is suppose to mean 3 years ago..)

dad noticed how i did the tilt-head pose and he imitated me in front of one of the lochs.. not bad, not bad indeed!

Old Travel Pics 12 - Edinburgh, Scotland

the beautiful scenic Edinburgh with the Royal Mile connecting the castle and the palace. it was the summer Edinburgh Fringe Festival (with lots of events/shows/performances) thus that purple blow up cow

the Scottish kilt, a street performer imitating Brave heart and my parents at the Royal Mile

a walk (stairs actually) up the Carlton hill where you can look down at the city. my parents and their local guide, pei pei

the Princes Garden at Princes Street. you can see the Edinburgh Castle on the hill (did i mention Edinburgh is very hilly?) nice place to relax and escape the city which is just few steps away

(big) family photo of us 6

meet up with Thurston at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Show

and we headed to the Craigs after that for an evening exercise

my dad was impressed with the view and gave 2 thumbs up so the local guide was allowed to reunite with her 2 sisters who came later to fetch her.. but later she has to work as our driver..

Old Travel Pics 11 - Cambridge, UK

i brought my parents (& pp, her 2 sisters) to Cambridge for a day trip.

sights around the many many colleges. i think some has free entrance while some you gotta pay, but if you know a student ask them to bring you in. Cambridge is one of my favourite towns in England besides Bath and York.

but what i love most of Cambridge isn't the fudge, beautiful architecture, prestige colleges or super-intellectual students..

its Punting! few of you get to be in this long narrow boat and you need a punter who guides the boat along the River Cam using a long stick. it was fun! here, pp's sister was punting while we were relaxing..

of course its much more expensive to hire a punter but at least he tells you the million stories of Cambridge, but for me, i rather get to punt even though i might get stuck somewhere.. what's the worst that could happen? it wasn't my 1st time punting which was y i dared to hire the boat without a punter. everyone had a go after i demonstrated.

had my hand at punting by the famous Bridge of Sighs (must be sighing too much studying for exams).. pp had a go too while my dad and i relax..

there's also a pedal where the 2nd person can help maneuver the boat (or as i used it before, help unstuck the boat by pushing the wall with it) dad did a lot of punting towards the end and we all agreed it was faster.. and as you can see, he had a good time too resting after some exercise!

Oxford's punting wasn't as beautiful which made me miss punting in Cambridge even more! meanwhile, the closest i can get to this experience is the 40sen sampan ride across the Sarawak river.. (but i doubt a long pole can maneuver it across the river though). and one thing i remember about this trip is i lost my favourite Xerox by Louis Koo shades (as shown in pics) boohoo!

Old Travel Pics 10 - Lille, France

i'll be frank, there's nothing much in this little town. the sole reason i came here for a day trip is to try out the (Waterloo) London, UK - Lille, France Eurostar train ride experience. and it is just like any train ride, except that most of the journey is underwater so you don't see anything but concrete (why am i so foolish to expect sea creatures like Sea World) and then you arrive at the other side and its an hour faster and the currency & language changes. would have went to Paris or Brussels if i have not been.

don't remember much of Lille, it has its cathedral and main square (its the most under-researched place for me, i didn't know whats there to visit and have no map with hardly any euros) but of course we were more interested in Carrefour (there's none in UK!) and bought french bread/baguette to munch on, although it's more like a toy for me since its so long. the fresh ones are good, crispy outside, soft inside. definitely miss Europe's bakeries now. one positive outcome from this trip, i get a Eu train stamp in my passport! (mostly planes.. now i have plane/train/car/ferry stamps)

The Letter that Changed Everything

it was definitely a busy morning. first of all i thought of doing some part time job as MDC told me i had another month or more to go post-registration (and i have not even done that yet). before i could respond to it, pp, on the other hand, suggested to travel, so we talked about her coming over to kuching/ miri / brunei, and i thought i should go over instead to taman negara/ kelantan/ terengganu makan trip or maybe we both should go thailand/ singapore/ cambodia. any longer and we would have talked about korea/japan/ taiwan.

yes, a lot of options were discussed, we took hours and hours. and i was about to call for the part time job as well when my mum shouted "Helen! Postman!"

AH! my 2 x 40kg boxes from London are finally here!

i remember the conversation with the pos laju postman as i was standing there in cartoon PJs and looked very unkempt-ed. since when i have to dress up and make up to receive parcels?

"Doktor Helen Ngu?" he asked.

"Yes"

"Doktor? Doktor Helen Ngu??" he wasn't convinced.

"Ya, saya.." i realized my attire looked more like a Pri 6 student revising hard for UPSR.

"Saya pergi itu Doktor Helen Ngu klinik kat sana" he pointed (translated: i went to the Dr Helen Ngu Clinic there) for those not from Kuching, there's a Dr Helen Ngu gynae at Central Park.

"Oh.. itu bukan.." (not that)

"Mana lu punya klinik??" (where's your clinic?) i could have roared with laughter on the spot. the letter was addressed to my home add for a reason!

"Tak da lagi.." i giggled (don't have yet)

"Oh.. baru grad?" (just graduated?)

"ya ya.."

"Kerja mana??" (work where?)

"hehe.. hospital.."

after that i just offered to sign for my stuff and i was surprised to get a little but fat envelope instead, not my 80kg junk. and its from Putrajaya!

still very embarrassed to be called Dr. Helen

i knew it! KKM/ Ministry of Health is sending back all my documents coz they aren't complete as i was missing my university certificate thus my MDC registration number! i rushed to tear the fat envelope open.

OFFER TO WORK? ALREADY??? my jaw dropped..

report on 1st OCTOBER to Jabatan Kesihatan Sarawak?? That's Next Week!?!??! still totally shocked.

my parents saw my letter and roared with laughter cause they know my endless hours of discussing where to travel/to work what part time or to do this do that for the next 1 month.. is all downnnnnnnnn the drain.

i grabbed my bb and messaged pp, and of course.. the rest is history..

PS: Information for future dentists working in Malaysia, registration might seem complex but its quite easy. Just report (in the order)

1. to your sponsor (with form and SPA offer letter) for me its JPA

2. SPA Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam for your offer letter (the whole set of certified copy: birth cert, IC, SPM, transcript, certificate, offer letter, photo) provided you have attended the interview. if not, interview at 8am (be there much earlier) then get your letter at 2pm. tip: sign on the spot that you are accept the offer. they should give you health documents for medical check up (chest x-ray and urine test too) and surat aku janji.

3. MDC Malaysian Dental Council (this is the tricky part as its the only department requiring originals of Birth cert, IC, cert and transcript and you Must have your uni cert, Bank draft/postal order rm150, 3 photos and another form) for the registration number, you should get your APC a week+ after sent to you. and also important: Call first for an appointment!

4. KKM/MOH Ministry of Health (also the whole set like SPA + parent's IC info) to apply for job and write where you are gonna be placed, you get to write 3 hospitals. kinda contradicting as MDC asks for 3 states. i think MOH overrules.

now that i have the offer letter, i can see i need 9 things to bring to report.. documents documents documents.. and i realized i don't have all of them. Darn!

6 days of freedom left before i have to Contribute back to the Society! not complaining, but arghhhh! *in denial*

Old Travel Pics 9 - Greenwich, London

Since i am not travelling in the very near future and have at least a month to spare, i decided to blog about my old travels pre-blogspot (since i am in Malaysia so London is considered a travel-place too) which was born on 26 August 2007 - *gasps* 3 years old already!

it would definitely be interesting as i go back into time to see where i have been before blogspot begun (many places, many stories still left untold) and how i looked like before (clothes/hair/THINNER?) and the crowd i used to hang out with. it might not be obvious but every year or two i seem to hang out with different people. sometimes you fall out and then u make new friends and then you fall out again as they find new friends. life's like that.

somehow i was into lovely Greenwich (GMT +0) during summer of 2007 . yes, every time you set your new hp/laptop to +7 or +8 for KL/Singapore whereas in London i have to set it to GMT 0, That Greenwich. time begins here.

visiting Greenwich with Terry, Sally and Kim Hong , fellow londoners who stayed back that summer (people don't normally stay back for summer, freaking hot and home-sick!) that picture on the top left is GMT 0..

if you didn't get the clear picture, its fine, coz i went there again..

with my parents who visited that summer and pei pei as well! there's a big clear digital clock showing the Correct time (to the milisecond or something) the line divides time to +/- so pei pei and i were technically on different time zones, like east meets west. Greenwich market is a nice small market if you are in that area, esp weekends.

we took the hour boat cruise from Westminster along the River Thames and under the Tower of London and London Bridge to Greenwich. nice quick way to see most of London. i think its under a tenner.

we ate at a Chinese restaurant near the Cutty Sark for Maritime DLR station called Tai Won Mein coz its really cheap (even in the 1st picture i was eating there also). actually all the Chinese/Thai restaurants in Greenwich are cheap. i remember you can eat a dish for £3.50-£5.

of course during those early poorer years (just completed 2nd out of 5 years back then) i was only able to afford cheap big-serving dishes like this, did you actually think i eat in posh hotels/restaurants the minute i step foot in London? anything more than £5 seems like a luxury.

i was hunting for food pictures with my parents and only found One!

Dutch pancakes at My Old Dutch, Holborn. i think there's an offer/loyalty card/ student discount that brought me here, knowing how saving i was before. its not bad, went there several times.

Then what did we eat??? please la.. when you are poor.. u Cook!

made japanese sushi with pei pei for my parents and her 2 sisters. sally and kim hong joined as well. i do miss making sushi!

cooked spanish paella (2 big pots: clam+squid and prawns) as well, boy was i busy to cook all these single handed! i remembered cooking nasi lemak for 14 people with some help from a friend. someone called me superwoman back then. now i'll just say "Let's Eat Out!"

and i cooked spaghetti as well (can't remember exactly what i cooked!), this time with elizabeth, menaka, noreen, gan, eve and mei lin. even back then i love to organize eating events/eat-outs to gather everyone but towards the end we eat out more coz i can't find the time and energy anymore. no matter wad there has to be food + friends. some things don't change.

yes, now i remember being poor in the first 2-3 years that i had to borrow money thanks to delay in allowances (looking at my old posts especially on 25 Jan 2008 and Money come, Money Go) and hardly eat out. its not always rainbows and butterflies! thank goodness i pulled through and had enough ££ to travel/eat out/enjoy the last 1-2 years before i leave London for good!
